the mundane

Last night, while reading in one of my devotionals, I came across this little gem. And as I was on my 5th load of laundry for the day and 2nd load of dishes, it couldn't have come at a better time.

"Ministering in everyday opportunities that surround us does not mean that we select our own surroundings— it means being God’s very special choice to be available for use in any of the seemingly random surroundings which He has engineered for us.

The things Jesus did were the most menial of everyday tasks, and this is an indication that it takes all of God’s power in me to accomplish even the most common tasks in His way. Can I use a towel as He did? Towels, dishes, sandals, and all the other ordinary things in our lives reveal what we are made of more quickly than anything else. It takes God Almighty Incarnate in us to do the most menial duty as it ought to be done."
                                                                                                                          ~Oswald Chambers

I think it's easy for moms who stay home (but, honestly, anyone) to look around and wonder how this matters in the grand scheme of things. We look at our surroundings and think, gosh, I used to get up and go do important work. And now I rinse diapers out and chase babies up stairs and take the trash out and do laundry, laundry, laundry. I consider the day a success when I'm able to clip three fingernails on one babies' hand. I wash dishes and floors and tiny, sticky hands and mouths. And I love it. But do I consider it my ministry right now? Because  I should. Can I use a towel as He did? Jesus washed feet, for crying out loud. Gross, dirt, dusty sandle feet. And it was important.

Am I so hidden in Christ that even the most mundane tasks are done in a way that points to Him? Am I relying on His strength to do this important work of being a mom? Wherever you are, whatever you're doing-- that is the important work you've been called to do today--even if it's the most un-important thing you can imagine doing. So, with that, I'm off to try to clip 17 more fingernails as it ought to be done. Help me, Jesus.

dear babies

Oh, babies...
You turned 10 months last week and it is every bit as wonderful and exhausting as I thought it would be. I loved the baby baby phase and my heart sometimes aches to just snuggle you for hours on end like I did when you were first born but, my goodness, is this phase fun. I could just watch you play and laugh and eat and discover for hours on end. And I do. Sometimes you laugh at each other and try to hug {which usually ends with one of you accidentally tackling the other resulting in a pile of laughing and/or crying babies}. Other times you play quietly next to each other lost in your own serious, little worlds. And then one of you will make a soft sound as if to share with your sister and you sit and wait for her to acknowledge your discovery before you both quietly return to your own toys. {Unless, you've just discovered banging a spoon on an empty oatmeal canister or how to climb into the dishwasher- in which case, the discovery is too groundbreaking to merely acknowledge and then I have two tiny girls trying to do the same thing.}
This past month you've learned how to chase each other and how to copy each other and it just makes me so thrilled that I got to have you two together. I never understand when people act like having twins is somehow unfortunate. I can't imagine it any other way. When you eat off of each other's trays or screech at the top of your lungs at each other or follow each other from room to room looking for t.r.o.u.b.l.e. When I go to check on you while you're sleeping and you're in the same exact position. When I can hear you 'talking' to each other instead of napping.

 I'm loving these days more than I ever thought possible. I get to watch you become the people you're going to be. And having two of you just shows me how truly individual you already are.

Lola, you're my little force. You are tiny but strong. You can pull up on anything. One handed.
You've been doing this thing lately where you kneel but stretch as big as you can get towards the sky and just talk and babble and laugh. You turn your hands up as if to say, 'What. You don't understand what I'm saying?!' You literally say 'eh?' like a little Canadian baby all day long. You ride in your car seat with your feet all the way up to your ears--maybe just because you can? And you fall asleep with your feet propped up on the handle or the shoulder of the person riding next to you. Just comfier that way, eh?
You've mastered climbing stairs and throwing toys. You love to watch these plastic shapes bounce across the hardwood floors. And today you figured out how to put the blue circle into the blue circle hole. Genius. You're obsessed with Howie and think he's your best friend.
{He doesn't think that so much. But maybe someday he'll change his mind.}

You are my mover and shaker. My fearless child. My risk taker. My hurricane. The ring leader of this little circus.
Climbing into the stroller via the basket underneath. Isn't that how everyone does it?
First shiner. From 'playing' daddy's guitar.

Charleigh Grace, you're my snuggle bug. You were second to roll over and crawl but the first to love on other people.
I can remember picking you up at about six months old and how tight you would hug my neck. You're busy as a bee but, if someone picks you up, you lay your head down and lightly pat their back.
Not sure about your dad here...
You give kisses with your mouth wide open and a huge smile on your face. You've mastered crawling now but for the longest time you got where you needed to go via 'the spin move' where you would get up on all fours, rock, spin, and sit down just that much closer to your destination. You're hilarious to watch as you sit and play with your toys because, without a doubt, you end up using your legs to to turn in a complete circle like a helicopter. You love playing with the door stops and, recently, started growling like a little monster--cracking yourself right up. You are much more free with your smiles and affections than your sister. Charmer.
Oh, that smile.

You are my silly child. My sweetheart. My love bug. Mama's girl. The sensitive side of this crazy duo.

Even on rough days where you two don't nap well or are cutting teeth or are both trying to climb up my pant legs at the same time {all day long}, I'll put you to bed and 20 minutes later look at your daddy and say, 'I miss them.' Because I do. You are such a part of me. The best part. And I know someday that will change. You'll become independent and make friends and grow up and go to college and you won't need me as much. But not tomorrow. And not for the next few precious years. For right now, we're our own silly, banana covered, Elmo-loving version of the three musketeers. Day in and day out. {Four musketeers if you count Howie. But, for some reason, he doesn't love to be lumped in with the three of us.} I love you two. Too much. And I always will.

dropping the ball

Remember this one time I had a blog? Oh yeah, me either. But, look at that, I do. And these baby girls are growing so quickly and moving too fast for me to capture all these memories in my heart. So I need to do it here. So I will remember.
I seriously feel like 'twin brain' (plus moving?!?) has taken it's toll on this already scatterbrained mind and made it something I can't even explain. I put my {non-toxic, child-safe}counter cleaner in the refrigerator the other day and then looked everywhere for it because I just had it. Last night, I got a bowl and lid out of the cupboard, filled it with leftovers, put on the lid, and put it back in the cabinet. I missed my friend's baby shower for her second baby because I mixed the date up with our other friend's baby's first birthday party. {Don't worry, Aime, I'll be there. Or do worry. No, don't worry. I'll have Warner remind me. Does this count as my RSVP?!?} To make it worse, a friend texted me to ask of I was going to the shower on the day of the shower and, as P-dubs and I were moving our hundredth box, I responded,  'yes!' all enthusiastically not even realizing it was that day. {Love you, Jenna. And your sweet Savannah-bean. Please forgive me.} I didn't even realize I missed it until I found the invitations for both events days later as I unpacked a box. Talk about feeling bad. And then I was a week off on my dates for a whole week and missed a consignment sale I was planning to go to {which was really sad because I had to miss the multiples consignment sale because we were all in Florida for my brother's graduation from film school}. Oy.
BUT both of my babies are alive and well and adorably silly. And we survived our first move as a family. {So.much.stuff in one little townhouse!} Yup. We moved. Sometimes I still can't believe it. {I was convinced we were going to live there until the girls could drive. Which they will never be allowed to do.}  There is still an unbelievable amount of stuff to do. And it's slow going with two very busy baby girls. But for now I'm just feeling so blessed and thankful. The sisters are thrilled with the new space and they don't care if pictures are hung yet. I just love them.

The other night, as  I sat down for the first time in about 18 hours, my mom looked over and said, 'Hey, you haven't done your blog thingy in awhile.' Which was true because when would I have had the time to do my blog thingy.  But in the flurry of packing and unpacking and cleaning and putting away and trips to Lowe's and traveling for graduations and meeting new cousins and more unpacking and mountains of boxes and packing paper, these girls turned 10 months which might as well be 22 years. In the time it took to pack up a life, they've decided to grow up and climb stairs and sleep through the night and and laugh at each other and play peek-a-boo and give up pacifiers and dance to music. I'm loving every second. I'm just afraid that, after the dust settles, I won't remember these seconds. And I so desperately want to remember. The way they smell so sweet and give sloppy kisses and 'chase' each other in a hilariously slow way and screech with glee for any and all food and then silently and very seriously eat it like big girls. I guess a lot of people just write these things in baby books but, to be honest, I don't know where they are right now and I'm much too busy watching two tiny girls discover a million new things to go searching in a stack of boxes.
And, yes, Charleigh Grace is licking that picture frame. Quirky child.

thursday things...on a tuesday

...because I have absolutely no idea what day it is and can't keep track of much these days. I was really hoping it was Friday. But I guess it's Tuesday.

1.  We are moving. {Hopefully.} What?!? Not moving far but into a house that is a little more suitable for two children crawling all over the place. The three-level, two-staircase, small-playing-space, opposite-of-open-floor-plan townhouse isn't cutting it lately. This is one factor contributing to my total lack of awareness about what day/time/state I'm in. Which leads to...

2.  My husband WANTS me to get Pinterest. He literally said yesterday. 'Did you get Pinterest? Did you pin anything today?!' To which I said, 'No.' I refuse to get Pinterest because I think I would spend too much time looking at a million ideas and not doing any of them. He argues that I should get it so I'm at least getting ideas.  I moved into the townhouse when we got married and it was already furnished and decorated. {P-dubs bought it that way. Smart little bachelor.} Not really how I would decorate it but it was decorated. Since we weren't planning on staying here forever, I didn't really attempt to change much. The only room I changed was the girls' nursery. It's also the only room I love. So now that we're moving and I can do anything I want, he thinks I should have all these ideas 'pinned' and ready. I do not.

3.  I spilled a whole peach milk shake in my lap. On my phone. Which led to my side of the conversation being really muffled whenever I called someone. Which then led to me yelling when I needed to talk to someone. And then, suddenly, my phone worked again but I got into the habit of talking really loud. I was talking to P-dubs at one point yesterday and he said, 'I think it sounds even louder than before you spilled on it.' Oh, no. That would just be because I'm still half-yelling when I talk to anyone. {So if you call me, I apologize.}

4.  I took the plunge and bought two amber teething necklaces for the girls. I've read a lot about them but the proof will be in the pudding. {Not literally in the pudding. But I could go for some right now.} After much research, I ended up buying the necklaces from Inspired by Finn. They seem to be very reputable and have lots of positive feedback. If anyone out there is itching to try these, you can use the discount code DM25 until August 16 for 25% off your order. People use amber for a lot of different reasons, too--arthritis, back aches, etc. Let me know if you try any of their products. My mom thinks they're a little hocus-pocus-y {not a word}. We shall see. I'll let you know if they seem to make a difference for the sisters.

5.  We received some certified mail today. Snoop Dog delivered it. Or his long lost twin. Apparently, you don't have to wear any sort of uniform to deliver certified mail? Never would have known.  Excuuuuuse me. Snoop Lion?!? I stand corrected.

6.  While the girls were napping today, I had the TV on as I ran around trying to get as much done as possible before one or both woke up.  It was Dr. Phil and he was talking with couples who have open marriages. I could not even fathom the crazy that was coming out of that TV. So, so strange. I should have taken the time to switch to the Olympics.

7. I made this for dinner tonight. It's kind of like homemade Hamburger Helper. I'm not a big Hamburger Helper fan but P-dubs sure is. I made it a little healthier by using ground turkey instead of ground beef and Greek yogurt instead of the sour cream.

8. Speaking of Greece, don't you just love the Olympics?!? Thank you, Greece. For that and Greek yogurt.
